Becoming Who God Says You Are: Overcoming Lies About Your Identity
Becoming Who God Says You Are: Overcoming Lies About Your Identity
A look at self-worth through God’s eyes, not the world’s standards
1. When the World Defines You Wrongly
We live in a world that constantly tells us who we should be—more successful, more attractive, more accomplished, more everything. But no matter how hard we strive, the goalposts keep moving.
Soon, exhaustion replaces joy, and comparison replaces confidence.
The truth? The world didn’t create you, so it doesn’t get to define you.
Only the One who formed you has the authority to name you.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart.” — Jeremiah 1:5
Your worth isn’t earned—it’s inherent. You are already loved, chosen, and redeemed.
2. The Lies That Steal Our Identity
Shame, comparison, rejection, and fear all speak lies that distort how we see ourselves. They whisper:
-
“I’m not good enough.”
-
“I’ll never be as successful as them.”
-
“My past defines me.”
-
“God could never use someone like me.”
But these are identity thieves, not truth-tellers. They come to steal confidence, kill calling, and destroy joy.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” — John 10:10
In coaching terms, these are limiting beliefs—internal narratives that keep us from living in our God-given potential.
The key to freedom? Replace lies with truth.
3. The Truth About Who You Are
When you see yourself through God’s Word, everything changes.
You are:
-
Chosen: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood…” (1 Peter 2:9)
-
Loved: “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” (Jeremiah 31:3)
-
Forgiven: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions.” (Psalm 103:12)
-
Capable: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
-
Redeemed: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
The same God who created galaxies also handcrafted your soul—with intention, design, and purpose.
4. From False Labels to Faith Identity
Just like coaching helps people uncover false assumptions about themselves, God invites us to unlearn the lies that limit us.
Maybe you’ve carried labels like “failure,” “too much,” or “not enough.”
God wants to rewrite those with His truth:
| The Lie | God’s Truth |
|---|---|
| “I’m unworthy.” | “You are fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14) |
| “I’ve made too many mistakes.” | “My grace is sufficient for you.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) |
| “I’m unseen.” | “The Lord sees you.” (Genesis 16:13) |
| “I’m not valuable.” | “You were bought with a price.” (1 Corinthians 6:20) |
Identity is not discovered through achievement—it’s received through relationship.
5. Faith-Based Coaching Perspective: Renewing the Mind
Faith-based coaching teaches that transformation begins with mindset renewal. Scripture calls it “renewing the mind” (Romans 12:2).
That means choosing daily to think truth instead of fear, grace instead of guilt, purpose instead of performance.
Ask yourself:
-
What false story have I believed about who I am?
-
Where did that belief come from?
-
What truth from God’s Word replaces it?
-
How can I live from that truth today?
When your thoughts align with God’s truth, confidence and clarity begin to return.
6. Reflection & Journaling Prompts
Take quiet time this week to pray and reflect:
-
Who have I allowed to define me besides God?
-
What lie about myself do I need to surrender?
-
What Scripture reminds me of my worth in God’s eyes?
-
How can I walk daily in my true identity as a child of God?
Write your answers, pray over them, and ask the Holy Spirit to remind you who you are when the world tries to make you forget.
✨ Final Encouragement
You are not your mistakes, your past, your achievements, or your failures.
You are who God says you are—beloved, chosen, redeemed, and equipped for purpose.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are.” — 1 John 3:1
When you start living from that truth, confidence replaces comparison, and peace replaces striving.
Your identity isn’t changing—it’s being revealed.
Stand tall, beloved one. You’re becoming exactly who God designed you to be.
